In the past decade, social networking has caused major changes in the way people interact. Studies have shown that the long-term use of social networking sites such as Facebook may be related to the signs and symptoms of depression and the use of social networking sites may lead to a decrease in the level of self-esteem in individuals, especially for children and adolescents. However, other studies have reached the opposite conclusion, believing that the use of social networking sites can improve individual self-esteem and increase individual well-being. To date, the relationship between the use of social networking sites and mental health remains controversial, and research in this area faces many difficulties. This review focuses on recent research on the potential relationships between social networks and mental health problems such as depression, decreased self-esteem and internet addiction.
