Objective To investigate the distribution of H 1 and H 2 receptors on normal liver tissue. Methods Eight patients with non-liver disease were studied by optical autoradiography. Results The H 1 and H 2 receptors were widely distributed in the hepatocytes and intrahepatic vessels, and the H 2 receptors predominated. The levels of H 1 and H 2 receptors in hepatocytes were significantly higher than those in the vascular wall (P <0.05) The highest in the vein wall, significantly higher than the hepatic artery and portal vein (P <0.01). Conclusions Histamine receptors on hepatocytes may be involved in the metabolism of histamine. The effect of histamine on hepatic hemodynamics may be mainly mediated by H 2 receptor-mediated vasoconstriction in the hepatic vein.
