俞敏先生对汉语语法研究的贡献主要在于：(1)从实用性角度研究语法，提出作文的三原则即用基本词、造短句子、写得具体，把语法教学与作文教学结合起来；(2)对创立全新汉语语法体系的尝试；(3)通过与方言和印欧语法比较的研究方法，纠正了清代重要虚词专著《经传释词》的种种失误。
