Soil structure refers to the size, shape and spatial arrangement of soil particles and pores that change easily and are related to a series of complex interactions among minerals, chemical and biological agents. Science is based on reproducible quantitative assays, but soil structures are not suitable for quantification. The value of soil structure indicators almost always depends on the test procedure, so the study of soil structure can largely be regarded as an art rather than a science. Moreover, most soil scientists who studied soil structure were not initially interested in the soil structure itself, but rather as a function of the soil structure as a medium for plant growth and solute transport. Often the study of ground samples in a laboratory does not understand the function of the soil structure under field conditions. Therefore, the development of soil structure must be widely understood based on the principle of combining science with art.
