The past 20 years, due to the large number of oral antihypertensive drugs available, the number of patients receiving hypertension increased significantly. According to the National Health Survey, less than one-eighth of patients tested and diagnosed with hypertension in the early 1960s; in the late 1970s, it was more than one-half. Numerous treatment trials have demonstrated that controlling hypertension significantly reduces morbidity and mortality from complications such as stroke, heart failure, kidney damage, and dissecting aneurysms.
