Fauvism, or beastism, is a modern trend of painting that prevailed in France from 1898 to 1908. Fauvism painters are keen on using bright, intense colors. They often use the pigments that are directly squeezed from the pigment tubes to create a strong picture effect with straightforward and extensive brushwork, fully demonstrating the expressionist tendency to pursue emotional expression. Fauvism was named after the Autumn Salon Exhibition in Paris in 1905, when the work of a group of avant-garde artists led by Matisse aroused an uproar.
