沈从文笔下的湘西,风土民情的诗意化与人际关系的理想化大大不同于匪患绵绵、尸骨累累的真实的湘西。这不是沈从文编造的现代神话,乃是一个作家文化选择后的道德努力。沈从文爱美丽,也爱永恒;爱世界,也爱人类,这种爱闪烁着关爱人类未来的宗教情怀。沈从文从愚野边陲的湘西来到大都市后,产生一种对城市文化的幻灭感反而时常以乡下人自居,他一面以嘲讽的态度鄙弃城市中人由怯懦、虚伪混合成的苍白生活,一面开始用抒情的笔调来描绘充满野性真诚的湘西风情,并由此对文明社会所引为自豪的“秩序”和“美”表现厌弃,而对田园牧歌式的生活和粗糙朴实的灵魂却非常向往。
