Many fairy images in popular novels during the Ming and Qing Dynasties are complex and pluralistic. From the perspective of the history of Taoism, such a fairy image is also the product of the secularization of Taoism and a change of “immortality” from a simple religious symbol into the secular realm and ordinary people’s life. Under this religious background, this article explores the connection between the literary phenomenon of complexity and diversity of immortal images in the Ming and Qing dynasties and the absorption and transformation of the gods by the Taoist immortal system in the secularization of Taoism.
