In May 1812, Napoleon led 600,000 troops to Russia and took Moscow in September the same year. But what it gets is an empty city. There was neither food nor shelter in the city (a full three days and three nights of fire), coupled with the threat of a harsh winter, the exhausted French being hungry and cold with numerous casualties. In the face of Russia’s scorched-earth policy, Napoleon had to order the withdrawal of troops. On the way, the French were unexpectedly ambushed by 50,000 Russian troops who had fought Turkey. In the end, only about 30,000 people could survive. This is the first defeat Napoleon suffered, but also his political career
