Hydrodechlorination of perchlorobenzene catalyzed by PVP Pd is conducted in different solvents. Besides H 2, alcoholic solvent also provides hydrogen for the substrate. Influences of various solvents, reaction temperature, the amount of NaOAc and different catalysts on the contribution of two kinds of hydrogen sources are investigated. The results show that solvent and reaction temperature affect the reaction obviously. Contribution of hydrogen from solvents follows the sequence of n propanol>ethanol> iso propanol>water(=0). At room temperature, ethanol does not provide hydrogen. With the elevation of reaction temperature, the contribution of hydrogen from ethanol increases. With PVP Pd catalyst, the apparent activation energies using H 2 and ethanol as hydrogen source are 33 kJ/mol and 60 kJ/mol respectively.
