This paper presents a systematic approach to reduce the number of GC fixatives. A set of 12 well-chosen fixatives was obtained and the relationship between the data from the fixed-solution data sheet published by McReynolds was described by the cut-off method. In the meantime, the cut-near approach can also determine which preferred fixatives will satisfactorily replace most commonly used fixatives. Mike Reynolds offers a comprehensive GC data sheet. Preston’s comments and articles published in this issue have focused on the need to study the relationship between fixatives, reduce the number of fixatives and make them normalized. McCleanotes lists ten compounds (benzene, butanol, pentanone -2,1-nitropropane, pyridine, 2-methylpentanol-2,1-iodobutane, octyne-2,1 , 4-dioxane and cis-tetrahydropyridinium) △ I value. Delta I is defined as the difference between the compound on squalane and the Kovats index obtained on each fixative. The retentate is then arranged in the order of “average polarity” of fixatives obtained from the sum of the delta I values of benzene, butanol, pentanone-2, nitropropane and pyridine. This grouping method indicates the similarity and polarity order of the 226 fixatives. However, the simple algebraic sum of the? I values obtained from the relative differences between the fixative and the squalane alone is unsatisfactory and does not explain the difference between the two specific fixatives.
