As a formalist advocate and spokesman, British art critic Roger Frye enjoys a worldwide reputation. Little-known, Frye has a deep roots in China. His art theory is partly due to the enlightenment given by Chinese classical art. The article explores the enlightenment and corroboration of Chinese classical art to Frye’s formalist aesthetics. Inspired by the Chinese classical works of art, he noticed the features of his brushstrokes, contours, marginalizations and rhymes. On this basis, he improved and deepened his own formalist aesthetic system.
