The Three Gorges Project has been postponed, and power shortages in Central and East China Power Grids need to be resolved. According to the 30-year power supply construction plan for the Central and East China Power Grid, the Three Gorges project should be put into production in 1997. The project is now starting in 1989. Two generating units (1.36 million kilowatts) were put into operation in 2000, which is half the capacity required in the plan for 2000 (8.45 million kilowatts). 3.7 million kilowatts of electricity was lost in East China’s 3 million kilowatts of power transmission. This urgently requires that other hydropower stations should be replaced as soon as possible. In addition to the East China Power Grid plans to put into production in 2000 before the pit (600,000 kilowatts), Shanxi (24 million kilowatts), Tianhuangping energy (1.5 million kilowatts), West Xingchong energy (600,000 kilowatts) Other hydropower stations have to step up their work, but they must also add 3 million kilowatts of thermal power substitutes. In the plan, by the year 2000, 36.25 million kilowatts of thermal power will be needed, and a total of 109 million tons of coal will be required each year (including 70.5 million tons transferred from Shanxi), plus 3 million kilowatts per year.
