多倍体育种是作物育种途径之一,可借以扩大植物栽培区域,揭示栽培植物起源和种间亲缘关系。不论是自然多倍体或是人工创造的多倍体植物,已有不少属优良性状应用于生产。茶树多倍体品种曾于50年代得以应用,如日本的自然三倍体品种牧之源早生、初绿,表现有良好的经济性状,发芽早、耐寒性强、很少结实,已作为推广品种,并肯定了发芽早是三倍体品种的实用特性。据苏联报导,四倍体茶树树型开张,叶片厚,披针形,叶色绿,明亮、中等隆起,叶柄长,光合作用强,节间中等长短。印度、锡兰也有过诱导茶树多倍体的试验报导。
