Can you ever imagine a bunch of hippy kids hanging out in a remote rural campus? That is Bard. Generally, students wear extremely informally, even in classes. I talked to a friend of mine, who is now a junior. She said that when new students come, they may look more conventional than upper class men. However, they will all be“Bardlized”. By their junior year, they will wear pajama to the classroom and don’t care any more, since“we are at Bard”. As you can imagine, most students on campus are“artists”and“writers”. Science kids can hardly be heard. Not being heard, though, doesn’t mean not exist at all. When studying books like Frankenstein, science people start to discuss why science people leave people the stereotype image-hiding in a dark cottage doing some dangerous schemes. It is especially sarcastic to talk of this topic in this college. The college finally contrived to build a new science building in the year of 2005. Students asked:“Why do we need a science building at this point of time when we are short of other academic buildings as well.”I smiled sarcastically. The famous president Leon Botstein said:“I don’t want my students going out of this college without knowing what nano-technology is.” while he explained the purpose of the science initiative he contrived. Talking of the president, he is a famous figure in the state and a very brilliant person. He likes to share his opinion with the public on magazines such as New York Times. He is also the conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra. Thanks to his effort, we get the great accessibility to music, especially classic music. I have many friends who are students in the newly established conservatory. It is said that it will become one of the best conservatories in the nation, as many world-class musicians accepted positions here. One important person in the conservatory is Mr. Martin, the director of the conservatory program and the vice president of the college. He is an extremely nice guy. Mr. Martin taught philosophy in National Taiwan University. He remains his interests in China. His wife Katherine is the director of Bard in China program. They work very closely with Chinese professors and hold various parties for Chinese students. Not until recently did I know that Mr. Martin is such a famous figure in the music world. Even the best pianists and violinists in the United States are his friends.
Having said enough about the administrators, I would like to say something about professors here. That is the best part of the college. When you look at their resumes, you will certainly be shocked at their education. Nine out of ten people got their PhDs from Ivy League schools, MIT, Stanford, or other venerable universities in the world. However, it means almost nothing unless you really sit in the classroom. My math professor this semester Ethan Bloch got his PhD from Dartmouth College. He is the most fabulous teacher I’ve ever seen. Ethan talks very fast but still clear. He loves what he teaches. I once asked that why did he choose to come here. He said most teachers here choose to come simply because they love to teach. As far as I am concerned, most professors are willing to help. They like to answer questions and work with students. Students at Bard usually don’t call people Prof. Blahblah or Dr. sth. We call professor by their first names. I was very uncomfortable with this when I just got here. Now, however, I’m also kind of“Bardlized”.
At Bard, like everywhere else in the United States, parties are an indispensable part of college life. I shall clarify that I don’t go to party often. Nevertheless, I did go to a party last week. It was a formal party. Literally, everyone shall wear suit, full dress or the like. I, therefore, for the first time wore my new suit. When I arrived at the party, I found I was among a few international students who were cheated by the name of“formal party”. People wore all different kinds of clothes and said:“I’ve never seen something really formal here.”It was a lot of fun that night, even though I danced awkwardly for hours. In the next day, life goes back to usual. Kant, Nietzsche, and proofs become the theme of my life. Again, I am a weirdo among many other real weirdo who come to Bard-“the place to think”.
