李约瑟博士刚才已经向您们介绍了他的巨著《中国科学技术史》,现在由我来说明他的治学方法。我是在一九五八年一月开始和他合作的。一九五七年在我动身往英国之前,我马来亚大学的同事、现在是香港大学校长的黄丽松博士对我说:在剑桥,最重要的是学习李约瑟的治学方法。李约瑟最近来香港为东亚科学史图书馆筹款时也曾谈到这方面的情况,现在且引他本人当时的叙述,然后由我稍加补充。
Just now, Dr. Joseph Needham introduced you to his masterpiece History of Science and Technology in China, and now I will illustrate his method of treatment. I started working with him in January 1958. Before I left for Britain in 1957, Dr. Huang Lisong, a colleague of the University of Malaya who is now the president of the University of Hong Kong, told me: At Cambridge, the most important thing is to learn about Needham’s method of study. Joseph Needham recently talked about this when he raised a fund for the History of Science in East Asia in Hong Kong. He now quotes his own narration at that time and then adds a little to me.
