在西北联大的众位校长中,李蒸与李书田形成了鲜明的对比,李蒸认为教育是为了提高全民素质,而李书田则认为教育是为了培养卓越人才,二者一个坚持平民教育,一个坚持精英教育,各自按照自己的理念,培养出了适合不同层次需要的人才。李蒸早年接受师范教育,此后一直坚持师范教育的独特性与必要性,坚信只有专门的师范教育才能培养出合格的师资人才,才能保证中小学教育的健康、有序发展,进而促进中华民族的繁荣昌盛。他先后担任北平师范大学(现北京师范大学的前身)和西北师范学院校长15年,培养了大批合格的师资人才,对我国的师范教育和平民教育都有极大贡献,其师范教育理念,深刻的影响着我国现代师范教育。即便是后来离开了学校,他还一直关心着教育事业的发展。
