This article cuts into Coetzee’s “waiting for the barbarians” from the perspective of narrative tense. First of all, aiming at the expositions of James Ferron and Dorit Kuhn et al. And then explores the thematic role of this technique in the novel and points out occasional narratives in the novels most overlooked by critics. The essay connects this discussion with Coetzee’s reflections on historical discourse, focusing on the use of the tense and the deep meanings after the conversion. He tries hard to discuss the clever use of narrative tense in the novel, The closedness and limitations of the paradigm, on the one hand, also reflect the attempt and failure of the hero to challenge the historical writing mode.
