In the past, the British Rail implemented a regular replacement system for traction diesel engine oil. When a certain period (or kilometers traveled) was used, the old oil in the diesel engine oil pan was replaced with fresh oil. The disadvantage of this approach is that it is unlikely that the timing of the oil change will be exactly right, often because the quality of the oil is good enough to continue to be used and replaced prematurely. Or on the contrary, the quality of the oil has been poor, but because of the oil change deadline and continue to use, causing damage to the diesel engine. More than 20 years ago, the British Rail changed this practice by regularly testing the physical and chemical properties of the engine oil to determine whether it should be replaced or not, thus saving on oil replacement costs. Practice shows that under British conditions, the cost of laboratory analysis of oil can be offset by the cost savings of avoiding unnecessary oil changes for diesel engines with oil pan capacities greater than 90 liters
