For the first time, the book systematically uses oral analysis to study second language interaction. By examining the large number of spoken conversation materials used by native speakers and second language users, the mainstream view of “non-native speaker” lack of communicative competence is challenged. The book proposes that second language users’ spoken conversation activities should be regarded as interactive
