Objective To investigate the prognosis and influential factors of neonatal systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Methods A retrospective analysis of our hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), from January 1997 to December 1999 admitted critically ill newborns. Results The whole group of 252 newborns, in line with SIRS diagnostic criteria 161 cases, accounting for 64%. The final development of MODS 84 cases, accounting for 52%, 32 deaths, the case fatality rate was 38.1%. Birth injury, asphyxia, children’s maturity and meconium amniotic fluid contamination easily developed into MODS, the mortality rate was significantly higher than non-MODS group. Conclusions Both incidence and mortality of SIRS and MODS in NICU are high, and perinatal factors seriously affect their prognosis. Must be early intervention
