Objective To investigate the relationship between respiratory distress and electrolyte changes in preterm infants. Methods From January 2004 to January 2006, children hospitalized in our pediatric department were divided into two groups: premature infants and children with respiratory distress. Serum electrolytes and clinical results were analyzed within 12 hours after birth. Results Hyponatremia occurred in both groups, with no significant difference (P> 0.05). However, the serum potassium of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome group was higher than that of premature infant group, the difference was significant (P <0.05) More significant, P> 0.01, blood chlorine was significantly different, P <0.05, but the mean blood chlorine in the normal range. Conclusion Respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants may lead to hyponatremia, hypocalcemia and hyperkalemia.
