Starting from 1964, tens of millions of passionate men and women mobilized a great deal of manpower and resources from the industrial centers of Shanghai, Shenyang, Harbin, Jilin, Beijing and Qingdao to the west with the enthusiasm of devoting their youth and lives to the cause of China’s national defense. In the remote areas, the principle of “backing up, dispersing and concealing” has taken root in the “third line” of the hinterland and built industrial and military bases in the remote mountainous areas in vast western and southwestern China. Since the social and economic backwardness of the third-tier areas has led to the extremely difficult operation and development of the enterprises and institutions that have been built up in a long period of time since then, the third-line construction has also made great contributions to the industrialization in the central and western regions of China.
