Professor Tian Guifen’s article in the Narrative Examination (see the ninth issue of the journal in 1989) is basically correct in explaining the concept of the exam and the significance of the exam in improving the quality of teaching. However, the analysis of the reasons for the abuse of the exam’s “magic weapon” is not exhaustive. I think that “some teachers regard the exam as the only motivator to promote student learning.” This is not the main cause of the problem. The main reason should be “stratified examinations.” In order to cope with the “level test”, teachers have to follow suit. “The four tests conducted within a week” is not typical. The phenomenon of a continuous test on a daily basis is not uncommon under the pressure of “stratified examinations”.
