Binary opposition is one of the typical narrative styles in Hardy ’s novels. Among them, the most prominent one is the binary opposition between the creation of characters in the novels, such as “Chancery of Casterbridge” Shu and Arabella in Jude “and” Tarzan and Tomaz in Returning Home, Ariel and Angel in Tess. The second is the antagonism between the character and the environment, and finally the binary opposition to the description of the environment. This article intends to analyze the narrative style of dualism in Hardy ’s novels from the above three aspects from the perspective of structuralism, so as to reveal the role of the model in highlighting characters, reflecting reality, deepening the theme and enhancing the appeal of works.
