Looking at the national land development and economic progress in China, you may see conspicuous interregional disparities. There are evidently two alternative macro-strategies in our regional development:selective development and balanced development. This paper, calling attention to the practice and theory of regional development at home and abroad, suggests that the selective development strategy should be adopted in the forthcoming 20 to 30 years,so as to transit from uneven to relatively even development following the model characterized by a“progressive diffusion from point to axis”.In implementing the strategy, with an eye on strengthening the linkages between the eastern and western parts of our country,it is required that first,a wide range of key belts of economic activities be established, with the two first class axes,i.e.the coastland and the zone stretching along the Yangtze River, forming a T-shaped macro-locational structure, and second, all kinds of laterally interrelated and interacting economic regions be set up.
Looking at the national land development and economic progress in China, you may see conspicuous interregional disparities. There are evidently two alternative macro-strategies in our regional development: selective development and balanced development. This paper, calling attention to the practice and theory of regional development at home and abroad, suggests that the selective development strategy should be adopted in the forthcoming 20 to 30 years, so as to transit from uneven to more even developed until the model is characterized by a “progressive diffusion from point to axis ”. In implementing the strategy, with an eye on strengthening the linkages between the eastern and western parts of our country, it is required that first, a wide range of key belts of economic activities be established, with the two first class axes, iethe coastland and the zone stretching along the Yangtze River, forming a T-shaped macro-locational structure, and second, all kinds of laterally interrelated and interacting economic regions be set up.
