The authors used enzyme electrophoresis to examine the enzyme characteristics of some isolates from different strains of Plasmodium so as to study and understand the enzyme variation of each strain, the genetic basis of the enzyme variation, and the genetic composition of the worm species. Enzyme electrophoresis with prepared blood type or free parasites found that four of the several enzymes of Plasmodium were of particular utility and were glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) (EC 5, 3, 1, 9) Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD) (EC1,1,1,43), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (EC1,1,1,27) and NADP (coenzyme II) -dependent glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) (EC1,4,1,2).
