Most people have seen brightly decorated① eggs, but Dorothy Crall of Irwin, Pennsylvania, probably has seen more of these eggs than anyone else. Crall has been collecting decorated eggs for many years. Today, her egg collection just might be the largest one in the world.
Crall began her collection years ago. At the same time, she also began coloring eggs herself. Later, she began asking artists to make special eggs for her. “I hand them an egg”, she says, “and ask them to do some artwork on it.”
As of now, Crall has painted over 2,500 eggs of her own. She has collected another 4,500 eggs painted by other people. Her dream is to open an egg museum.
Some of Cralls favorite eggs are old ones. Years ago, in Russia and other countries in Eastern Europe, decorated eggs were very important. Eggs were given as gifts. They also were used as good luck charms②. A few were even put in buildings as works of art. Some were painted. Others were covered with pieces of glass or beads. Some were even covered with gold and jewels③.
Dorothy used to travel around the county in her van④, called “The Egg Mobile”. She would go from one fair⑤ to another showing people her eggs, as you might guess, she was welcomed wherever she went.
