I. About Standards and Disciplines This is the third report of standards that was written for the American Society of Comparative Literature (A-CLA) and issued in accordance with the Institute’s Bylaws. The first report, published in 1965 by the commission chaired by Harry Levin, was published in 1975 as the product of a committee chaired by Thomas Greene . The two documents have striking resemblances to the comparative literature. In fact, in Greene’s report, the challenge and challenge of comparative literature, when justified by the criteria set forth by Levin, did not give a clear account of the goals and possible circumstances of comparative literature. The reports of Levin and Green jointly expressed the concept of the discipline that had prevailed in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Some of the comparative literature insists on following the standards set by these two reports, and many of the current members of the American Society of Comparative Literature acquire their PhDs from these departments. However, it is the historical, cultural and political context in which this same group of comparative literary scholars are working, as well as the issues being addressed by many of them, compared with their professional training
