In 1993, William Coley reported for the first time that the “Bacterial toxin-activated immune system induced tumor regression” was 100 years old. When many of the successive cancer vaccine trials have been well-received, active immunotherapy has not yet become definitive cancer therapy. The new molecular vaccine approach is based on rational immunological principles that enhance the systemic anti-tumor effects in animal models. Finally, the genetic identification of tumor-specific antigens will be used to develop targeted antigen-specific vaccines for cancer treatment.
