Objective To observe the changes of plasma endothelin - 1 (ET - 1) levels in patients with noninfarmed anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and to explore the relationship between ET 1 and NAION. Methods Plasma ET-1 levels were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in 41 patients with NAION and 15 matched age-matched controls. The patients with NAION were divided into 3 groups: severe edema group, mild edema group and edema edema group according to the degree of optic disc edema.According to the course of disease, the patients were divided into 14 days after onset of disease (group 1), 15 to 30 days (group 2) ~ 60d (duration of 3 groups) and 61 ~ 180d (duration of 4 groups) and other 4 groups. The levels of plasma ET-1 in NAION patients with different gender, optic disc edema and course of disease were compared and analyzed. Results Compared with the control group, plasma ET 1 levels were significantly increased in NAION patients (t = 5.22, P <0.05). There was no significant difference in plasma ET-1 levels between different gender NAION patients. The level of plasma ET-1 in different groups of optic disc edema was significantly different (F = 4.65, P <0.05). The level of plasma ET-1 gradually decreased with the prolongation of course of disease. Statistical significance (F = 4.2 9, P <0.05). There was also a significant difference in plasma ET 1 levels between the two groups in the duration of treatment 1, 2 and 3 (t1 = 5.92, t2 = 3.47 , t3 = 2.18, P1 <0. 01, P2 <0. 05, P3 <0. 05). Conclusions Plasma ET-1 level in patients with NAION may be related to the extent of optic disc damage and duration of disease.
