从《搜神记》和《世说新语》的比较可以蠡探干宝的精神向度。记载同一人物事迹,《搜神记》关注人的宿命和术数,不同于《世说新语》激赏人之品貌风流;记述服妖现象,《搜神记》视其为社会、政治之灾异,迥异于《世说新语》暗含赞赏服妖无视礼教,张扬个性;干宝与《世说新语》中的名士交往,彰显出其守成、拘谨的儒家人格;干宝撰《搜神记》乃史家留名和“明神道之不诬”心态,刘义庆撰《世说新语》为的是释放自由的心灵。总之,干宝的精神向度处于玄学思潮和魏晋风流的对面,这主要与他深受汉儒易学思想和礼教思想影响有关。
