Red tides seriously threaten coastal ecosystems and also affect fishery production. The reason for this is that chemical pollution, such as phosphates of fertilizers and detergents, are nutrients required by algae. The second is the iron-rich sand in the sandstorm. A recent American oceanographer’s study of red tides in Florida’s open seas believes that excessive precipitation during hurricane landings, after accumulating in the underground water layer and infiltrating into the sea, plagues a large number of pollutants as a whirlwind of red tides. In 2003, there were 119 red tides in China’s entire sea area; in May 2004, the total area of red tides in the central and southern seas of Zhejiang reached 4,000 square kilometers, which is rather worrying!
