五四时期传入中国的西方现代思想包括自文艺复兴以来的理性启蒙思想,也包括始于尼采的非理性欲望思想,两者夹杂糅合着进入中国人的视野,暗合了当时剧烈变动的社会历史语境。民族危难使鲁迅等具有启蒙思想和强烈爱国情怀的知识分子思考如何改造麻木、颓废的国民性,谋求中华民族的总体性解放;而处于传统与现代猛烈冲击中的新女性,如丁玲,主要考虑的是感性个体的平等、自由和独立。思想深处的异质性使得两位作家的作品体现出两种完全不同的现代性追求,而身体是现代性发生的场所,文学的现代性通过身体表征,这一点却成为他们共同的选择。

The modernity of literature is characterized by the body, which has become their common choice.
