改革开放以来,随着以江苏人民出版社“海外中国研究丛书”为代表的一大批西方汉学家研究中国的论著陆续译介至国内,不仅在学理和方法上拓宽了中国学者自身在研究本国问题时的思考路径,而且也使国人开始注意到这些“洋先生”(部分学者其实是华裔)书中描述的中国形象。相比于汉学家的专业著述,传教士、外交官和商人这三类早期来华人士留下的大量论述中国的文字虽在学术体例和专业规范两方面略逊一筹,但由于它们一般都具有较为宽广的视野和顺畅通达的文笔,往往也更具可读性。
