In order to save energy, not only continuous casting technology, hot charging rolling (HCR) technology and direct hot rolling (HDR) technology have also been developed. In order to further save energy, a concept of a mini mill is proposed. The mill is trying to produce slabs of small cross-sectional dimensions, the next-generation caster. In general, slabs produced by caster have a thickness of between 200 and 300 mm. Thus, a roughing mill is needed to produce hot-rolled stock for the hot strip mill.
