龙是多变化、多功能和多栖居的灵物,其躯干却基本上是蛇那样圆滚、细长、夭曲、蟠蜷,许多类似的动物曾被比附、被尊化为龙———包括小小的蚯蚓或某种水虫。更重要的,它们有测雨和致雨的本领。红山文化的虫体玉龙不但体现着蕃育、再生的信仰,而且也可能用来“祷旱”,祈雨。它是否“水虫”虽未明确,但在神话民俗里,“虫虫”(昆)之类的水虫确曾是水雨云雾的原型,与太阳对立的幽阴暗湿的意象。“虫龙”或以蚕(或蝉)及其蛹的形态出现,也因为它能在春雷惊蛰时变化,兆示并诱导着雷雨。
