The Pulitzer Prize was established to recognize individuals who have achieved great accomplishments in theater, literature, music and journalism, and is comprised of 21 awards. The Pulitzer Prize was founded on the will of Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of New York World. Beginning in 1917, Pulitzer awards are presented each year by the University of Columbia on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Board of Directors. The press photo award was first issued in 1942.
