This article is intended to justify one of the core ideas of indexed semantics, namely the existence of hidden variables in the syntactic structure of quantified word phrases. The current criticisms of this view are as follows: (1) the syntactic rules are not enough to explain the domain limitation of quantified words; (2) there is a difference between the hidden index words and the real index words; (3) the constraint argument leads to the expansion of the hidden index words. This paper points out that hidden index words and index words have the same characteristics in indexality, but only in the syntactic status. Rules that seem to contradict syntax may result in purely syntactic explanations by clarifying concepts. Replacing hidden index words with hidden variable parameter functions can maintain the stability of the syntactic structure when the constraint relationship increases. Therefore, the quantification of the domain of the word limit to deal with the existing criticism, is still regarded as a syntax rule.
