Alcatel has succeeded in delivering 40Gbps at its lab with 32 DWDM wavelengths over a distance of 2,400 kilometers. This result was achieved with Alcatel’s 40 Gbit / s system, the advanced non-zero dispersion shifted (NZDSF) Teralight fiber and fully Raman amplifiers. In contrast to the traditional use of repeaters (or EDFAs), this technology is yet another solution that ensures high quality over long distances and enlarges the amplification bandwidth. The distributed or online Raman amplifier solution offers two potential advantages over traditional EDFA: increasing signal-to-noise ratio; and increasing available bandwidth for expansion.
