Although Pseudomonas aeruginosa is widely distributed in the human environment and produces a large number of virulence-related factors, Pseudomonas aeruginosa does not infect human tissues unless the normal host defense function has been compromised. In human-injured respiratory tissue, Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells were found to attach to the epithelial shedding basement membrane, indicating that the affinity of the extracellular matrix proteins is responsible for the opportunistic pathogenicity of the bacteria.
