The U.S. Department of Defense said on May 15 that the U.S. military recently started to develop a low-power, near-zero power sensor that extends the sensor’s life span from weeks or months to years. This not only reduces sensor usage costs but also reduces the frequency with which sensors can be redeployed and reduces the risk of exposure to service personnel. This project is called “Near Zero Power RF and Sensor Operation (N-ZERO)”. According to a press release issued by the U.S. Department of Defense website, existing sensors continue to consume energy at work, but most of the power is used to process irrelevant data. The near-zero power sensor is usually “sleep but still conscious” state, only the signal of interest, such as a particular type of vehicle will wake up, the noise and interference are ignored.
