我国办公自动化技术在档案部门的应用是在七十年代末、八十年代初才逐步开展。随着复印机、电子式中文打字机、缩微存档设备、光盘存档设备、微型机的推广应用,以提高档案部门各项工作效率为目的的单项办公设备的应用有了较大发展。“七五”期间,国家档案局、中央档案馆以及各省市、地县档案馆都不同程度的筹划和开展了办公自动化系统技术的应用,重点项目和普及应用项目相结合,并且有计划分步骤的逐步推广。档案部门要适应不同规模、不同等级的单位开展办公自动化系统建设的要求,可将档案自动化系统的基本模式划为四个等级:
