Henry is a second lieutenant serving in the Italian ambulance team. He fell in love with Catherine, a British nurse. Henry was injured in an artillery attack, was taken to a hospital in Milan, and Catherine went to nursing. During the recuperation in Milan, Henry and Catherine spent a great time in the summer. When autumn arrived, Catherine told Henry that she was pregnant, but she refused to marry Henry, and she was worried that she would be sent back to England for getting married. After the injury, Henry returned to the front line. At this time front-line war situation chaos, Italian morale is low, without a retreat, defeated. In a retreat, Henry took off his military uniform, dropped his weapon and made a small difference. When he inquired Catherine’s station, he went to see her. Although wearing casual clothes, Henry is still under suspicion and in danger of being arrested. He and Catherine fled to Switzerland by boat. In Lausanne, Switzerland, Catherine was unlucky at childbirth, mother and son died, leaving heartbroken Henry alone wandering in a foreign land.
