“一词多译”是指一个句子中的同一个词由于搭配不同而采用多种译法。在大多数情况下,产生一词多译不是因为英语的一词多义,而是由于英汉两种语言不同的搭配关系或修辞要求。例如,当句中出现 economicand social progress 这一词组时,progress 受两个形容词修饰,直译为“经济和社会进步”。但汉语可说“社会进步”,一般不说“经济进步”。据此,需要把 progress 分别译成两个名词,即把这一词组译为“经济发展与社会进步”。又如,to put up 15 rooms and tents,to put up 后有两个宾语,
“Multi-word translation” refers to the use of multiple translations for the same word in a sentence because of different combinations. In most cases, producing multiple translations of a word is not because of the polysemy of English, but because of the different collocations or rhetorical requirements of English and Chinese. For example, when the phrase “economicand social progress” appears in a sentence, progress is modified by two adjectives, literally translated as “economic and social progress.” However, Chinese can say “social progress” and generally does not say “economic progress.” According to this, it is necessary to translate progress into two nouns, namely translate this phrase into “economic development and social progress.” Another example is that to put up 15 rooms and tents, to put up there are two objects,
