自宋以来,中原有不少文人士大夫为躲避战乱,辗转南迁,其中有最后留居于今香港新界地区。他们不但经济上富有,而且在明、清时代科名显赫,单是新界邓、彭、侯、文、廖五大姓,进士、举人便不下数十人。他们在新界等处建起大量宅第、祠堂、书室,不少是岭南建筑的杰作。 Since the Song Dynasty, quite a number of scholars and scholars in the Central Plains have evaded the war and moved southward, among which they eventually resided in the New Territories of Hong Kong.
