A long time ago, there was an emperor. He had a beautiful garden. In the garden, there was a little nightingale (夜莺) singing very beautifully.
One day, the emperor heard about this little bird’s beautiful voice. He asked his guards to bring her to him. As soon as the emperor heard the nightingale’s voice, he said, “Put her in a golden cage, so she can stay and sing for me whenever I want to hear her.”
The little bird was so unhappy about being kept in the cage that she stopped singing one day. The emperor was very angry. He ordered the scientists in his palace to make a robot bird for him. The bird could sing very beautifully, too. The emperor was pleased.
Soon the robot bird became old. It no longer sang beautiful songs. Just at that time, the emperor became very weak. One morning, while lying in bed, the emperor wanted it to sing once again. But the robot bird couldn’t sing any more. Suddenly the nightingale landed on the window. She began to sing her most beautiful song. The emperor was very happy! He became better and better each day.
After the emperor was well, he changed a lot and became kind to his people. From then on, all his people cherished (爱戴) him for his love and kindness.

One day, while I was waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free from some sort of prison (监狱). The boy would then fall to the grass, get up, without looking back at his mother, and run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.
At that moment, I thought to myself, “Why aren’t most adults this way?” Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don’t even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they
would find a good excuse for themselves that they’re not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure (失敗).
However, with kids, when they fall down, they don’t consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected “falling down” with the word “failure”. What’s more, they probably think to themselves that it’s quite okay to fall down and that it’s not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes, so they remain energetic. I was deeply impressed by the boy’s persistence (坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.
(    )26. What did the little boy do when he fell down?
  A. He cried and lay on the grass.
  B. He asked his mother for help.
  C. He got up and went on running.
(    )27. In the writer’s opinion, what might the little boy regard his falling down as?
  A. A failure. B. A joke. C. A learning experience.
(    )28. In the writer’s opinion, why can’t many adults succeed?
  A. Because they like being embarrassed.
  B. Because they can’t find a good excuse.
  C. Because once they fail, they won’t attempt again.
(    )29. The underlined word “attempt” in paragraph 2 means _______.
  A. 尝试 B. 放弃 C. 面对
(    )30. What does the writer want to tell us?
  A. Practice makes perfect.
  B. Failure is the mother of success.
  C. All roads lead to Rome. C)匹配  阅读下面材料,从所给的A-F六个选项中,选出正确的选项填空,使短文通顺,内容完整。(共5小题,每小题2分)

  31. ________ However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive (自衛的). Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective (有效的) way to get what you want is to stay calm.
Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as, “I’m sorry to bother you, but...” or “Excuse me, but could you?” For example, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable.” Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps. 32. ________ Could you help me? I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it’s cracked.”
  33. ________ There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase. “I know this isn’t your fault, but...” or “There has been a misunderstanding.” 34. ________ Blaming people isn’t as important as getting a problem fixed!
There are honest mistakes, but at times someone may try to take advantage of you. In that case, don’t say “Hey! You’re trying to cheat me!” Instead, use the phrase, “I understood that...” For example, “I understood that the service charge was included in the price.” Then give the person a chance to answer.
If you don’t get what you want with polite conversation ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. 35. ________
[A. When trying to complain about a problem, don’t blame (责备) the person you’re talking to.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of the class or when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?
Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people. Experts have found that more than 80 percent middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.
It’s OK if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes. It’s just a cause of how much. Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for the food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If being shy doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, it isn’t a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.
You see, being shy isn’t all bad.
But remember not to let good opportunities pass by just because of it!If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practise your spoken English in front of others, just do it!There’s nothing to be afraid of.
[What does shyness mean? It means feeling 36. ________ when you are around other people. This kind of shyness is not a big problem for a person. People have 37. ________ and talk in 38. ________ when they get shy. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person. Some people fear to meet new people,so they seldom 39. ________. Honesty of American Students
When I first arrived in America, I was surprised by the honesty of my classmates. Over my first month at school, I didn’t see or hear anyone cheating. I found two reasons for this.
First, if any student cheats, he or she will get punished. My school has a rule called the Honor Code. It asks students not to steal, lie or cheat. If someone goes against the code, he or she will have to leave the school. During my first year in the school, seven students left the school because of cheating.
Second, American students don’t care about scores as much as Chinese students do. They know that colleges will look at their all-round abilities instead of only scores. So they have fewer reasons to cheat.
  46. The writer didn’t see or hear anyone cheating when she first arrived in America, did she?
  47. What is the Honor Code about?
  48. What will happen if students go against the Honor Code?
  49. Who does the writer think care more about scores, American students or Chinese students?
