Louis Malle’s documentary “Calcutta” and “Indian Phantom of the Opera” are the windows of the West’s understanding of Indian society. Mahler recorded the authenticity of Indian society from the perspective of the other. The two documentaries merged with Mahler’s “Direct Films” “Bystander Aesthetics and France ” New Wave “thought, but also a product of rational reflection on Western tools after World War II. Mahler’s documentary presents India in the West in a new technological way, and the art of reproduction has given the West a real understanding of Indian society. The documentary discards the narrative of the poetic narrative of traditional cinema and shows the spectacle aesthetics of Mahler, allowing western audiences to feel the authenticity of the picture and the ”new wave" of thought open up new fields of art.
