Tetrodotoxin is a potent sodium channel blocker that affects the production of cell membrane action potentials by blocking sodium channels. The high expression of tetrodotoxin-tolerant sodium channels in injured tissues provides a new target for finding a new generation of effective analgesics. This article reviews the effects of tetrodotoxin on sodium channels and explores possible mechanisms of analgesia.
