Be careful to choose irrigation rates and irrigation schedules, especially in humid areas to reduce irrigation water while maintaining production. Irrigation schemes are compared using computer simulations based on changes in irrigation initiation time and irrigation rates and how much irrigation decision information is available. An irrigation plan based on better information reduced the average increase in water per hectare from 74 cm to 35 cm, a reduction of more than 50% from the standard irrigation schedule. Better irrigation programs also increased average net income per hectare from US $ 51.1 to US $ 79.7, representing a net increase of more than 50% over standard irrigation schemes.
